Going green

March 5, 2012 - Kathleen Palumbo
With St. Patrick’s Day nearing, I thought I’d take a moment to remind my readers that not being of Irish descent doesn’t exclude you from the day’s festivities.

I had the best of both worlds…Italian Sunday dinner’s and Christmas Eve’s at grandma’s with Dean Martin on the stereo (thanks dad), and courtesy of my mom, a home chock full of all things green on St. Patrick’s Day (she even managed to con my dad into a green tie one day a year…a real feat).

Later, I had fun with it too. When my kids were little I left a trail of pennies from the end of the driveway, where they got off the bus to the house, colored the toilet water green, and left little green thumbprints (leprechaun footprints people...geez, do I have to spell it out for you) all the way up the steps to their room. Did they believe it…you betcha!!

My point? Whether Irish or not, the holiday provides the opportunity for endless fun and merriment.

So for those of you without a drop of Irish blood…don’t sweat it…wear your green, grab a Guinness with friends and spend the day shouting “Top of the mornin’ to ya,” and you’ll be good to go. I promise – that’s no blarney.
