My Mind Runneth Over

Mother Nature has fans

Most people watched nervously Friday evening and into Saturday as Mother Nature laid upon the area a most impressive down comforter of winter whiteness, and most people cursed her for doing so. While I’ll admit to a major case of Spring fever myself, I was awestruck at the beauty of the “blanketing” process.

For instance, have you ever noticed the overwhelming silence that consumes the area during a heavy, evening snowfall? More importantly, have you ever walked in it? Silently…nothing to hear but your own thoughts as each flake flutters to the ground, the glow of the streetlights further illuminating the already sparkling display? Trust me, its well worth your time.

As most people broke out their snow removal tools of choice, I broke out my camera first, and captured some of Mother Nature’s handiwork, as well as a few of the neighborhood kids putting it to use as only kids can.

On Friday evening when the storm was peaking and most people were troubled over driving conditions and cancelled plans, I called my mom. Regardless of the season, mom is ever prepared for a storm. She lives alone, yet could feed herself and a family of twelve from her freezer, having stocked up while “battening down the hatches.” “What do you think of the snow,” I asked. “Isn’t it beautiful,” she sighed, almost breathless in describing its allure.

Now I know where I get it from.

I still recall the awe I felt when I opened the garage door and found my self isolated from our street. It took me four hours to dig out, but it was a great sense of accomplishment when it was done. Now I can sit back and enjoy the beautiful winter while the ice dams on my roof present problems with water drips where they shouldn't be. I can view the spledor of a sculpted ice pillar that is probably the olny thing holding my gutters in place at this point. I can take in the awesome white landscape, realizing that my poor dog is out there somewhere trying to conduct business. You see, he is a medium sized dog and he is white. I'll eventually find him, but for now I'll just take in the beauty of winter.

Beautiful my butt...the plow "blanketed" the end of the driveway in four feet of ice. It'll be beautiful when it melts and I can see green again
