Mr. and Mrs. John Saunders Jr. of Canfield were honored by their children, family members and friends as they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary during a dinner at Dutch Haus Restaurant in Columbiana. The celebration was Feb. 27, exactly 50 years from the day when John Saunders Jr. and the former Dolores Van Kirk were married at Ss. Cyril and Methodius Church in Youngstown.

The dinner was hosted by their sons, John of Virginia, Melvan and Tim of Columbiana, and daughter-in-law Connie, a teacher at Joshua Dixon Elementary School in Columbiana. Three of their five grandchildren, Melvan Earl “Vinny,” Thomas James and Kaleigh Mae, all of Columbiana, were in attendance. (Brandon and Stephanie of Vienna, Austria, were not in attendance.) John's brother Terry and his wife Karen, of Hollywood, Fla., James and Ethelda Hope of Canfield, Tracy and Hannah Haney, friends of Tim, Jennifer Unkefer and Olivia Murphy, friends of the grandchildren, and June Sharish, John's cousin, were all guests at the dinner.

John worked for Republic Steel in Youngstown and Warren, retiring in August 1982. He was president of Canfield Rotary for 2002-2003 and has been involved with Canfield First Night for the past 12 years, where he is responsible for fund-raising.

Dolores is a teacher at Hilltop Elementary School in Canfield. She taught at Villa Maria High School in Pennsylvania from 1964 through 1969, when she began teaching at Canfield High School and was the girls gymnastics coach until the team was dropped in 1985. She was transferred to C.H. Campbell Elementary School, then to Hilltop, where she will retire at this end of the school year. She has enjoyed all of the children that she has been fortunate to have taught and her many great memories from the past 46 years.
