Zachary Krohn, 12, of Austintown ended up fifth at last weekend's Soap Box Derby finals in Akron. The event marked the end of the season for Soap Box Derby and the beginning of the new one, with Zach invited to the champions race in Columbus on Aug. 7.

Zach was this year's Youngstown Area Soap Box Derby champion in the Super Stock class. He represented the area in a field of over 500 drivers from around the globe, making it to the top nine and the finals rounds to crown a world champ.

Making the final rounds and finishing fifth also gave Zach the right to enter the race that will kick off the 2011 season. The race is held with all the top finishers and it gives him another chance to beat the four drivers who finished above him in Akron.

"He finished fifth, but could turn around and finish first in Columbus," said his father and pit crew chief Chris Krohn. "The Columbus race is just for the champions."

Zach will run his Super Stock car in that race, then will never again compete in that class. As the Youngstown champion he is required to move up to the Masters class, which will give him a shot at something no one has done before.

In 2008, Zach captured the Stock class championship. With this year's win in Super Stock under his belt, he is setting his sights on a Masters class championship to become the first driver in the Youngstown Soap Box Derby to capture championships in all three classes. After his race in Columbus, he will be ready to build and run in the Masters.

If Krohn can keep his seat in victory row, he will be giving the rest of his family the opportunity to make it an "all-Krohn" year in 2011. Zach's younger brother Brandon, who was this year's Stock champion, will be moving into the Super Stock class for next race season. Zach's younger sister Allison is interested in racing and if she does, she would be in the Stock class. That would open the door to the potential Krohn clean sweep. Zach would love to see that happen, but is more focused on his own personal goal.

"Youngstown has never had anyone win all three classes," Chris said. "He wants to be the first."
