Chizmars celebrate 65th years of marriage

An open house was held May 29 at the home of Michael P. and Margaret A. Chizmar of Canfield to mark their 65th wedding anniversary. Guests numbered upwards of 170 and came from Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and England to help the couple celebrate.

The party was hosted by the couple’s children and their spouses: Mary-Margaret and Bert Pharis of St. Augustine, Fla., Michael and Kathy Chizmar of Pickerington, Peter Chizmar of Boardman, John and Janet Chizmar of Canfield, Louise and Steve Easter of Canfield, Anna Marie Frease of Youngstown, Debora Chizmar of Canfield, Leo and JoAnn Chizmar of Boardman, Martin and Debbie Chizmar of Mineral Ridge, and Kevin and Mary Lou Chizmar of Akron. In addition to their 10 children, Mr. and Mrs. Chizmar have 26 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Chizmar and the former Margaret A. Meenachan were married May 18, 1946, at Sacred Heart Church in Youngstown. Mr. and Mrs. Chizmar are members of St. Michael Parish in Canfield and were longtime members of St. Brendan and the Sacred Heart.

Mrs. Chizmar is a homemaker and worked as the school secretary at St. Brendan’s grade school during the 1970s and as a clinical assistant at the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic until her retirement in 1993. Currently, she volunteers in the St. Elizabeth neonatal intensive care unit crocheting afghans for newborns.

Mr. Chizmar proudly served with the U.S. Army as a Ranger in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a general foreman with Youngstown Steel Door Co. until his retirement in 1982, and is an active member of the Austintown Eagles Aerie 3298.

Mr. and Mrs. Chizmar received many cards and letters of congratulations, greetings from President Barack Obama and the first lady, Gov. John Kasich, U.S Sen. Sherrod Brown, and State Rep. Ronald Gerberry. They also received a papal blessing from Pope Benedict XVI and a City of Youngstown proclamation from Mayor Jay Williams.
