The Canfield High School's girls tennis team is off to a terrific start, seated at 4-0 as of Monday.

While the team is somewhat young, the five returning varsity members are playing a key leadership role that will help continue putting points in the win column.

The most recent match was on Monday morning, when the girls took on Lakeview. The varsity took the win with a 5-0 shutout.

Senior leadership for the 2014 Canfield High School's girls tennis team includes Emily Ellis, Marina Sturgeon and Bri Slemons.

''So far, we are off to a good start,'' said head coach Rob Stephens. ''I am pleased with how the girls are doing.''

This year's team has three returning seniors in Emily Ellis, Marina Sturgeon and Bri Slemons. What makes the undefeated start so special is the fact the team lost eight girls from last year's team.

''We are a young team, but doing good,'' Stephens said. ''The season looks promising. The improvement we will make over the rest of the season will be exciting to watch.''

One doubles team to watch will be that of sophomore Hannah Cianciola and junior Ashley Kaleel. Last year, they made it to round two of the state championships. The two are looking for a return trip with a better outcome this year.

''This year we are at least going to make it to the second day,'' Cianciola said.

Stephens said this week will be the toughest. In mid-week, the team faced Louisville and Poland. This Saturday will be the big test as they host two teams from Cleveland and Upper Arlington from the Columbus area.

''They are three of the top teams in the state,'' Stephens said.
