SARASOTA, Fla. -- Thalia ''Toppy'' Mae Treffinger Findlay, 84, of Sarasota, Fla., and formerly of Canfield, passed away Monday, Aug. 17, 2015.
Toppy was born on Jan. 5, 1931, to Frank and Bernice Buck Treffinger in Canfield.
She graduated from Canfield High School in 1949 and went on to receive her bachelor's degree in education from Wittenberg University in 1953, where she was a proud member of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.

While teaching at Boardman High School, she married the love of her life, George C. Findlay, on June 27, 1954, and they welcomed their only son in June of 1960.
Together they owned and operated the Canfield Speedway. After George's death in 1968, Toppy received her master's degree in education from Youngstown State University and relocated to Sarasota in 1973. There she taught at both McIntosh Middle School and Venice High School before retiring in 1991.
In addition to teaching, Toppy enjoyed playing bridge, singing in the church choir at the Siesta Key Chapel, and being active in her condo association. She was also a former member of Canfield Presbyterian Church, where she was a choir member. She was also very proud of the lifelong friendships she forged with her sorority sisters at Gamma Phi Beta and enjoyed visiting with them whenever she could.
Toppy is predeceased by her parents; her sister, Thelma Treffinger Wiley; and her beloved husband, George.
She is survived by her son, Scot T. Findlay; her granddaughters, Jenney Adams and Haley Lukachyk; sister-in-law, Betty Martin; nephews, Dr. Richard Wiley, Dr. Doug Wiley, Bruce Wiley, Tedd Wiley, Robert Slingluff, Richard Macaulay, Larry Martin and David Macaulay ; nieces, Carol Sabula and Lisa Murray; three great-grandchildren; as well as many friends she considered family.
A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Canfield Village Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Canfield Presbyterian Church.
