Holborn Herb Growers to award scholarships

May 9, 2016
By J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

The Holborn Herb Growers Guild will be awarding a $1000 scholarship for a student entering college in the Fall of 2016, or currently in college, in the field of horticulture.

Acording to Guild member Mary Grace Fowler, the scholarship fund is generated from proceeds of the annual tea party held at the Western Reserve Village in the Canfield Fairgrounds. Along with the sale of a cookbook entitled "Herbal Fare" and annual plant sales, the Guild raises enough to offer the scholarship.

gWe have presented the scholarships for several years," Folwer said. "Recipients are strongly encouraged to volunteer in the Canfield Gardens."

The Canfield Gardens are a variety of themed gardens at the Western Reserve Village. Each garden features specific herbs. As an example the Native American Garden would feature herbs used by Native Americans, or the Bible Garden by the church would feature herbs from Biblical times.

Prior to the fair, it is not unusual to see a host of young people assisting the guild with the care and preparation of the gardens. Some previous scholarship winners come back just to help out.

For 2016, students can get an application via email at within the next week.

Prospective applicants must live in Mahoning, Trumbull, or Columbiana counties.

"The scholarship will be presented to the recipient at our annual summer picnic in July," Fowler said.
