At the Sept. 21 Canfield City Council meeting, city Manager Joe Warino shared some information on a recent ranking from the online financial site Insider Monkey.

The site ranked the city of Canfield as the No. 1 city in Ohio to retire.

"I learned about it from an email," Warino said. "Guy Coviello, vice president of governmental affairs for the (Youngstown-Warren) Regional Chamber, sent it to me."

According to information Warino found on the Insider Monkey site, the top 10 cities for retirement in Ohio were selected by looking at the top 20 most liveable locations with a population of more than 5,000. The site then researched the cost of living, crime rates, percentages of residents older than 65, and the number of physicians per 100,000 people.

Canfield had a rating of 55, moving it to the top of Ohio cities for retirement. It has a rating of a 7 percent cheaper cost of living when compared to the rest of the United States. The best comparison was Cortland, with a cost of living that is 16 percent lower than the U.S. average.

On number of physicians per capita (100,000 people), Canfield has 311. Second through fourth place posted 563 per capita, which included Bay Village, Rocky River and Brecksville.

On crime rate, Canfield received a 20.2. Of the top 10 cities, only three were lower, which included No. 2 Bay Village at 15.6, fourth-place Brecksville at 16.4, and seventh-place Madeira at 17.5.

As for the number of residents older than 65, the data had Canfield at 19 percent. The largest number was eighth-place Columbiana at 27.4 percent, and the smallest went to 10th-place Wyoming at 14.2 percent.

"Being No. 1 is a nice honor to receive," Warino said.

He also mentioned it wasn't the first time the city made it in the top of a list. Back in 2005, the city of Canfield was named No. 82 in the top 100 best places in the United States to live.
