YOUNGSTOWN - The OH WOW! The Roger & Gloria Jones Children's Center for Science & Technology in Youngstown is planning additional educational exhibits for 2017.

Colleen Ruby, director of visitor services, said the center is in the middle of the ''Drive to Excel'' display with two new components installed.

She said everyone has the drive to engage in their world regardless of their circumstances. The new exhibit area, Drive to Excel, explores equipment and technologies that can be used to enable each person to engage in life activities.

"The Drive to Excel focuses on using technology to help accomplish what we want to, including using prosthetic hands and dancing and moving with prosthetics. We hope to have the entire exhibit finished by March,'' Ruby said.

She said the exhibit includes all hands-on activities.

One exhibit to be finished soon is "Drive to Hold," which has participants using prosthetics to get a ball to travel along a track.

Ruby said the center will continue its weekly children's learning program Saturdays with different monthly themes. For January, the theme is rockets.

Upcoming events include on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when schools will be closed, the center will be in collaboration with the Youngstown Phantoms and will offer activities and displays during intermission on the ice.

The annual ''Day of Pi'' will be held March 14 with activities related to 3.14.

Ruby said the center has been busy, taking part in First Night Youngstown with musical performances and a magic show.

She said two college students from Brown Mackie College in Florida are doing internships at the center, compiling data on the use of the exhibits and displays to see which ones children take part in and for how long.

Ruby said she has learned that water-related exhibits and the wind exhibit, which is being upgraded, are very popular with children.

The center, 11 W. Federal St., Youngstown, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday to Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. For more information, all 330-744-5914.
