BOARDMAN - Glenwood Junior High School seventh-graders recently were gearing up for a national competition - KidWind Challenge.

Eric Diefenderfer's seventh-grade science class was the first to start the process.

The students were using wind turbine kits, purchased through the Boardman Schools Fund for Educational Excellence teacher grant, to design and build their own wind turbines to generate electricity.

"Students spent nearly a week researching how wind turbines work, usage and factors that affect turbine blades' efficiency," Diefenderfer said. "They trace designs onto cardboard, then they construct turbine blades out of materials they choose and conduct trials and record their data (voltage produced)."

The kids then entered their data online for the KidWind Challenge, a monthly national competition.
