CANFIELD - Mahoning County Educational Service Center recently awarded two $500 Franklin B. Walter local scholarships.

Canfield High School senior Max Lee was recognized from Mahoning County, while Noah Fisher, a senior at Southeast High School, was recognized from Portage County.

Lee then went on to represent the MCESC as one of 88 seniors from across Ohio at the 28th annual Franklin B. Walter All-Scholastic Awards Program in Columbus.

The Franklin B. Walter Scholarship is awarded to one high school senior from each county in Ohio who has shown outstanding academic achievement through grades, test scores, involvement in activities and awards.

Out of a dozen applicants, Lee was selected as the Mahoning County winner by the MCESC.

Lee is very involved at CHS, with activities including tennis, debate, academic challenge, National Honor Society and Student Council, where he serves as class president.

He founded a nonprofit organization called MyGateway Prep, which provides free ACT tutoring to students in Mahoning County as well as other states including New York, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

He volunteers at Akron Children's Hospital, Angels for Animals and Shepherd of the Valley.

Lee plans to major in public policy at Stanford University in the fall.
