Summer concert series kicks off in June

May 25, 2017
By J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

The Canfield Concerts on the Green is set to kick off June 12 with the Canfield Community Band and will continue through Aug. 7.

The concert series will continue a 40-year tradition and take place 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays on the Village Green.

To fund the series, the Concerts on the Green Committee was formed last year and is actively seeking donations to ensure the continuation of the event.

Mayor Bernie Kosar made Barb Dixey, a longtime concert supporter, the committee's honorary chairperson. She is collecting donations from businesses and individuals.

Dixey's son, Jack Dixey, said his mother recently moved back to the area and looks forward to spending the summer on the Village Green. For the past few years, Jack and his brother have donated money to the concert series in honor of his mother for Mother's Day. He said her name now appears in the official concert program and is listed as a sponsor of the concerts she enjoys so much.

"This way mom's Mother's Day gift is enjoyed throughout the summer," he said. "Mom wintered in Florida for 28 years but is now living at the Inn in Ironwood. She plans to attend all of the Concerts on the Green ..."

Jack Dixey said his mother also is looking forward to the mini dinners that are held prior to five of the concerts at the Canfield United Methodist Church.

"She is excited as always for the season to start," he said.

He said the series costs more than $2,500 per year and is funded in part by local business and individual contributions. Donors are listed in a program used throughout the season and distributed to various Canfield locations.

The deadline for inclusion in the program is May 15. A $200 donation will get a company listed in the 'business' section of the printed program. Individuals contributing $100 or more will be included in the 'private donor' section.

"But most of all, you will be helping to continue the 40-year tradition of concerts on the green.," Jack said.

Donations can be sent to or dropped off at the Canfield Municipal Building, 104 Lisbon St. Donations made by check should include 'concert fund' on the memo line of the check.

Jack Dixey also made fundraising buttons for his mother that read, "Barb Dixey and I Support the Canfield Concerts on the Green 2017." He said each button is $10.
