Hall of Fame expecting 100 percent turn out

This year's Austintown Fitch Athletic Hall of Fame contains 13 individuals and two teams and the Sept. 23 induction ceremony is expected to be represented by 100 percent of the inductees.

"In this committee's third year together, we expect 100 percent attendance from the 13 individual inductees," said committee member Dan Bokesch. "If the Individual is deceased, a family member usually is there to represent him or her. With the teams, we have found that an 80 percent attendance is normal."

The two teams recognized this year are the 1986 Boys Soccer Team and the 1962 Football Team. Bokesch said the football team has quite a few deceased players and coaches.

As for how far the athletes have traveled in past years to attend the Hall of Fame weekend, Bokesch said last year a wrestling team member flew in from China to take part. Even deceased players are often represented.

"We, as a committee, try our best to locate relatives to represent those who have passed," Bokesch said.

Nominees and representatives of nominees receive free tickets for the weekend's football game and for the banquet. The game this year will be on Sept. 22 when the Falcons take on Youngstown East. All inductees will be introduced prior to the start of that game.

On Sept. 23, the official induction ceremony and dinner will take place at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Center.

Bokesch said the committee reviews all the nominations from the current year back to 2008 when the Hall of Fame was started. He said the committee has roughly 100 nominations on file to choose from. The HOF Committee will review all of those nominations for individuals, teams, coaches, and contributors when coming up with the next group of inductees.

"Our Committee reviews all nominations from current year back to 2008," Bokesch said. "We select with secret ballots and place a specific number of votes needed rule" to become an inductee or a team."

This year's individual athletes include Kurt Andrson from the 1976-77 basketball team, Kurt Kamperman from the 1975 tennis team, the late Dominic Bertolini from the 1930's basketball, football and track teams, Tina Kubacki from the 1981 gymnastics team, Trenton Bullock from the 1992 track team, Mike McGlynn from the 2003 football team, Takelah Eaton from the 1999 track and basketball teams, Joe Murray from the 2004 wrestling team, Donna Holmes from the 1978 tennis and track teams, Ron Strollo from the 1988 football, basketball, and baseball teams, Coach Tom Fender from the 1986-1997 basketall team, Ken Jacubec from 1964 for his contributions, and John Mashiska for his contributions.
