Jazz and dessert mix for AMS fundraiser

January 25, 2018
The Town Crier

Jazz has always been thought of as "America's Classical Music." In the Mahoning Valley, desserts in the line of the "Youngstown cookie table tradition" are also a classic. On Saturday, Jan. 27 from 6 to 9 p.m., these two classics will merge for the Austintown Band's third annual Jazz & Dessert at the Austintown Middle School Cafetorium. The event, sponsored by the Austintown Band Parents Club, Inc. is a perfect mix of music and sweet treats. The musicians range from A.M.S. sixth graders though Fitch Alumni who graduated as far back as the '70s. The bakers range in age from a high school junior to a 91-year-old former band parent.

Over 20 area amateur and professional bakers will supply close to 40 different treats while four jazz bands entertain. The 25-piece Austintown Middle School Jazz Band under the direction of Jeremy McClaine will perform at 6 p.m. They will be followed at 6:45 p.m. by 21 members of the Fitch Alumni Jazz Band directed by former band director and a current Fitch High School principal, Marc Pupino. The high school has two jazz bands and they are conducted by Wesley O'Connor. The 20-member Fitch Jazz 2 will perform at 7:30 p.m. Fitch Jazz 1 and their 24 members will close the program playing from 8:15 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The community is invited to this unique benefit for the Austintown Band programs. Admission at the door is $5 per person and includes 10 dessert samples per ticket. Refreshments and carry-out containers can also be purchased. Each ticket sold includes two votes for the best professional and the best amateur bakers. There will also be a Chinese Bakery Auction with treats donated by each baker. The awards for bakers and auction winners will be announced prior to Fitch Jazz 1's performance.
