Lainie Simons and Jared Godwin will have a lot to talk about at the end of this month. The two Fitch juniors were selected to attend the annual RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Award) weekend at the Avalon Inn Feb. 23-25.

According to Austintown Rotary spokesman Gary Reel, the event is sponsored by the local Rotary clubs in the district. Each year members of the junior class of high schools are selected as a way to encourage leadership and community action in their lives. Students selected are involved in a variety of school organizations and athletics.

Simons is involved in Key Club, Interact, Spanish Club, softball and volleyball. She is the daughter of Bobbi and Orvill Simons and is looking into the medical field after graduation.

Fitch juniors Lainie Simons and Jared Godwin will represent Austintown later this month during the RYLA weekend at Avalon Inn.

Godwin is involved in STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math), Interact, Spanios Club and tennis. He is the son of Kristen and Ed Godwin.

"RYLA has been around for at least 25 years and we have always sent two students at our expense, which is about $375 now per person," Reel said. "The goals are learning about team building, interpersonal skills, networking, ease at speaking with a crowd, and self confidence, which are all the big needs for teens. We can usually find the candidates among our Interact Club [at Fitch] so advisors know them pretty well by junior year."
