Westchester back on the list for street repair

February 8, 2018
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

A 100-foot section of Westchester Drive was dug out and repaired with drainage, a new base and repaved last year and it held up great. Township officials are now looking at an additional 500 feet that need the same repair.

"We have another 500 feet that needs done," said Township Administrator Mike Dockry. "There is a small section heading towards Mahoning Avenue, and the rest is from the first repair to the entrance of Rachel's. We will be going out for bid soon."

Dockry said the 100 foot repair included digging up the road and installing drainage, a new sub-base, and replacing the road surface. He said it is at a crucial point right now and the township can't afford to wait.

"When you have mud coming up, you're losing the road," he said. "When you are talking underground water, it is hard to predict if anything is going to work. We did the 100 feet to see and now we know we need to do more."

The estimate for the repair will be around $90,000. Dockry said it will come out of road resurfacing funds, but it can't wait without risking severe road damage. The work is likely to be done this summer on the remaining 500 feet. It will include the drainage and new sub base just like the first 100 feet had done.
