Crosswalk takes a different turn

The proposed crosswalk between Village Hall and the Poland Public Library is still on the drawing board, but through different funding avenues.

"It appears I spoke way too early in regard to the Library financing anything to do with the crosswalk that I would like to see as a safety feature for all," said Poland Village Councilman Sam Moffie. "I totally misinterpreted what was said to me by a member on the board. I have since decided to go in another direction."

He said having a safety crosswalk across Ohio 170 is still an important issue worth pursuing.

"The library will not be involved with the crosswalk except as a beneficiary," he said. "We hope to do the crosswalk in conjunction when (Ohio) 170 gets resurfaced in a few years providing that my colleagues and the Mayor are in agreement."

The resurfacing of Ohio 170 has been on the planning board for several years. The big plus is the safety crosswalks would be much cheaper to install when the road is being done, than it would to bring the equipment back out to do it separately.

As for funding, Moffie said he is looking to Eastgate to lead the way. He said there are probably other funding sources that could come into play and he is hoping any new crosswalk would be rated for the handicapped.
