Helping missions are all in the books

April 5, 2018
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

A passion for reading and a good book are all it takes to raise funds to help missions around the world. That is the intent of the 62nd annual Westminister Presbyterian Church Used Book Sale.

According to spokesperson Sue Maraffa, the book sale has gone beyond what the originator ever dreamed of.

"The first book sale was the brainstorm of Hazel Thorne, a member of the church, back in 1956," Maraffa said. "Back then it featured 2,000 books. This year's event will feature over 60,000 books. It has grown way beyond Hazel's wildest dreams."

All 60,000 books this year differ from the 2017 sale. In fact, none are carried over from year to year as Westminister Presbyterian Church is now a county drop off for recycling books.

"The books we can not use are recycled," Maraffa said. "None are carried over from prior years."

To handle the big event, the church has 40 volunteers who spend hours each month dusting, sorting, and pricing the books.

This year's event will take place on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and April 26 and 27 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. On April 26 all paperbacks are half price and on April 27 until 4 p.m. all books are half price. After 4 p.m. on the 27th, books are sold at $1 for a grocery bag full. The grocery bags are provided at the sale and help is available to carry and load purchases.

Categories in the sale include fiction, non fiction, sports, hobbies and religion, cookbooks, an especially a large section devoted to children's books for all ages as well as video games, music CDs, vinyl, DVDs, and puzzles.

"The reward of hearing people say they look forward to the event all year, makes the hard work worth it," Maraffa said. "Volunteers are proud to be involved, knowing all the proceeds go to local, national and international mission outreach."

Westminister Presbyterian Church is located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman.
