Lions getting set for the Treasures of the Trunk

April 5, 2018

The Poland Lions have begun work on setting up the 2018 Annual Treasures of the Trunk Sale to be held at the Poland High School Stadium parking lot, corner of Ohio 170 and Dobbins Road, on Saturday, June 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

"This is our fourth year [for the event] and we are hoping to keep it an annual event," said event coordinator Judy Young. "So far we have conducted the sale the second Saturday in June and plan to leave it there."

She said the event will go on rain or shine. While that weather forecast is a ways off, preparing for it is not. The Poland Lions have already began to seek vendors for the event. Anyone can rent one of the 100 spaces to sell everything from merchandise to garage sale items to local residents.

"Vendors can be crafters or residents," Young said. "We've had Tupperware dealers, kolachi, other small business, jewelry, makeup and garage sale items."

She said vendors are literally selling out of their trunk. If they choose, they can bring a table to set up on. The event will go on rain or shine.

"There will also be a basket raffle with over 25 items, raffle for two Cleveland Indians Tickets for a game in July and other fun events," Young said. "One of the Boy Scout troops will provide refreshments for everyone in attendance."

The reason the Lions have begun selling the spots now is the fact there are only 100 available. The cost is $15 and it is first come first serve. Once the 100 are sold, the lots are closed for the event.

"This event is our major fund raiser for the year," Young said. "Our Lions Club provides eye glasses to those living in our community who are in need. We provide a scholarship for a graduating PSHS Senior. Our funds also allow us to provide other services as requested such as the community food pantry, special school activities and Celebrate Poland. This event helps us with our annual blanket drive held each November."

She said the event averages around $2,000. Besides the spot rental, the Lions also hold basket raffles to bring in funds.

The present fee of $15 will continue until May 1. If any spaces are left after May 1, the price will be $20.
