Lady Spartans have rough time building momentum

April 26, 2018

Like all other programs in the area the Boardman softball team has fallen victim to inclement weather since the start of March.

Important midseason games have been blown away in the wind and snow so Boardman's girls have had a rough time building any momentum. Makeup contests are starting to pile up and some games have been totally scrapped.

The Lady Spartans did secure an impressive 5-3 road victory at Newton Falls back on April 13. Senior Paige Dill slammed a homerun to help ignite the Spartans' offense. Dill's big bat is one that the Spartans' brass knew it could count on and it hasn't let them down so far this season. Freshman Nina Scavelli was one young Spartan that was mentioned as a possible future shining star and she showed up for the Spartans as well in Newton Falls with a triple. Fellow freshman Kathryn O'Horo earned the pitching win for the visitors.

After a weekend of weather more befitting the Boardman football squad, the softball team took the field at home to host sizzling Canfield. The Lady Cardinals were unbeaten in the All American Conference's Red Tier entering this battle and stayed that way after leaving Boardman. The home team fell 13-3 to the hot hitting Redbirds. Dill did all she could to keep the Spartans alive slamming a pair of doubles. O'Horo showed what she could do as a pitcher in the previous game then came up big at the plate against the Cards. She had a double and two RBIs in the loss.

Now that the climate is starting to climb back to respectability the Spartan ladies should be able to go full charge. A huge home-in-home series with conference archrival Austintown Fitch should warm thing up if Mother Nature doesn't do it herself. Boardman plays in Austintown on Monday, April 30 then welcomes May with a home tilt against the Lady Falcons on Tuesday. Those two games against Fitch should allow the Spartans to get their competitive fires burning as the stretch run of the season commences.
