Lady Spartans looking to playoffs

May 9, 2018
By Nik Zirounis , The Town Crier

If the Boardman softball team wants to advance deep in the pending Division I state tournament, it'll need to do better than it did last week against an archrival.

All American Conference Red Tier sister Austintown Fitch beat up the Boardman girls in a pair of matches. The Lady Falcons shutout the Lady Spartans 6-0 at home on April 30 then came back one day later to bludgeon Boardman 18-4 on the Spartans' home diamond.

Boardman's offense will need to be better in the playoffs than it was in the first game with Fitch. The Falcons' Lydia Spalding spun a one-hit complete game gem. She silenced the Spartans with 16 strikeouts. Unfortunately for Boardman, Spalding won't be the last ace it sees over the next couple weeks. Playoff pitching is always stacked so the Spartans must rev up their bats.

There was more hitting in the following day's contest, but Boardman still fell hard to Fitch. After falling behind 7-0, the Spartans scored three times to cut into the Falcons' lead. Eleven runs by the visitors over the fourth and fifth innings stymied the Spartans however. Paige Dill plastered a home run and a single for the Spartans in the losing effort. Lauren Maughn added a hit for Boardman. Certainly, Dill and fellow senior Gloria Hynes will be counted upon to lead the offense the rest of May.

On May 9, the Spartans were scheduled to start the Solon districts with a home game against number 11 seed Kent Roosevelt. The 7-10 Spartan ladies are seeded sixth in the same district that houses number 1 Canfield and number 2 Aurora. The winner of the game between Boardman and Kent will advance to play third seeded Nordonia in Macedonia, but you can bet that the Spartans will keep one eye on what happens in Canfield's half of the field. The Lady Cardinals stopped the Spartans in last season's districts so redemption will be on the Boardman youngsters' minds should they move along to meet the Cards in the sectionals. Of course, the Spartans have plenty of obstacles in front of them before they can challenge Canfield.
