Fundraising continued over the weekend for the proposed Mahoning Valley Middle East Memorial to be built at the Wickliffe Circle Park on Mahoning Avenue in Austintown. A small group of veterans sat outside Walmart, 6001 Mahoning Ave., where they were well-received.

"This memorial is important to me because a lot of veterans served over there and never came home," said Dave Ewing, an Iraq War veteran who served in 2004-05. "Some that did come home were wounded or suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder)."

It was Ewing and veteran Tony Revetti who were talking about the need to honor those who have and are serving in the Middle East. The idea of building the memorial moved from a thought into reality with the two men taking the helm.

Veterans Erika Zahrndt, Tom Moss Jr., Dave Ewing, and Tony Revetti collected donations in front of Walmart over the weekend to go towards the construction of a memorial at Wickliffe Circle Park to pay tribute to veterans of all Middle East conflicts.

Revetti said the memorial is expected to cost between $45,000 to $75,000. At this point he is looking at several different quotes and trying to weigh them as to which would offer the best memorial at the best price.

So far, Revetti said between $5,000 to $10,000 has been raised with more fundraisers coming later this year. One fundraiser will be a poker run on Sept. 22 that will start and end at American Legion Post 737 in Lake Milton.

Ewing and Revetti said the funds have been coming in slowly and no big corporate donations have been made to date. He still is hoping to obtain enough to build the memorial in 2019.

Revetti said the first phase will be to get the memorial put in place. The plan calls for a 10-foot high solid granite stone with 60 porcelain tile inlays. The inlays will contain an artistic rendering representing those who served in the Middle East. The new memorial will stand by itself on the south side of Mahoning Avenue at Wickliffe Circle Park.

A Go Fund Me account was also set up at Additionally, donations can be made at the Farmer's National Bank in care of the Middle East Memorial, or by sending a check made out to the Mahoning Valley Middle East Memorial, c/o David A. Ewing Jr., 4617 Deer Creek Court, Apt. 1, Austintown, Ohio, 44515.

"Every penny will go directly to the monument," Revetti said.

He added that once the memorial is completed, the committee will stay in place and all funds after that will be used towards helping those veterans who served in the Middle East.
