At the July 9 Austintown Township meeting, resident Eric Newton gave a challenge to Austintown Trustee Jim Davis. He challenged him to go skydiving later this month.

Newton, a longtime resident and member of the Austintown Senior Center, is 75 years young. Last year he wanted to fill one item on his bucket list, which was to go skydiving. Unfortunately it didn't work out.

"I tried last year, but I got cramps and couldn't pass the physical requirements," Newton said. "This year I am OK to do it."

Eric Newton challenges Austintown Trustee Jim Davis to a skydiving challenge.

He said before a person can jump out of an airplane, they must first go through a physical. The cramps last year prevented Newton from going up. He took the physical again this year and was given the green light, but he didn't want to jump alone. He challenged Davis to take part, to which Davis agreed.

"I would love to use this as a fundraiser for charity," Davis said as he agreed to the challenge.

Davis will also have to take the physical prior to the jump, which has been set for 5 p.m. on July 26.

Trustee Ken Carano said he would arrange to have the event covered by Channel 19. Carano did make one statement on the challenge.

"I'll never understand why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane," he said.
