Boardman Lions held their 10th annual New Coats for Kids Program at Target in Boardman on Tuesday, Oct. 2. There were 61 Boardman families who were experiencing financial difficulties and qualified to attend the night at Target to select their new coats. Ninety-six kids shopped for new coats, and a snack was provided by Target.

Applications went home with all Boardman elementary students and were evaluated by a committee. Selection was based on the information provided, and coats were purchased for those families in greatest need first. Then the list is worked through until the budget is spent.

Qualified applicants were notified by mail and invited to a night at Target to select their coats. After shopping for their coats the family was given a snack provided by Target. Lions members Kathy Collins, Nancy Golubic and Marcie Hughes served as personal shoppers. Their help was greatly appreciated by the kids and their families.

"We are almost self supporting from donations," said Lions member Judy Jones. "This year we spent $4,400 on 96 coats. In the ten year period, 455 families have received 941 coats for a total of $42,825."

The club has already started fund raising for next year. Anyone who would like to donate to the program can visit the Boardman Lion's website, www.boardmanlions.com.
