Township Park disc golf course gets major upgrade

Those who like disc golf are going to love the changes to the 18-hole course at Austintown Township Park. Close to $5,000 was spent to bring the course up to PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) standards.

"We have all new baskets for our disc golf," said Park Supervisor Todd Shaffer. "We have replaced all 18 holes and added a 19th bucket west of Tee 1 for putting."

Besides adding the new baskets, the course has undergone a new design. Hole 7 now goes into the woods for a bit of a challenge. Hole 18 now ends the course by Pogany Pavilion. The old Hole 8 was eliminated and Hole 5 that used to go over the pond has seen a change as well.

Austintown Township Park Supervisor Todd Shaffer shows the new starting point for the 18-hole disc golf course at the park. The new scorecards have the layout of the course as well as the par for each hole.

"Too many were losing discs in the pond," Shaffer said. "So we moved the tee to the edge of the pond and moved the basket back."

The project this year wrapped up with the addition of new signage and a new starting box with scorecards that have a map of the course on the back.

Shaffer said there is one more improvement coming next year. The plan is to add concrete tees.

All the recent work meets the PDGA's criteria to be able to host a tournament. The new course has already attracted a group of disc golfers who want to make Austintown Township Park their home course.

While the future looks bright for disc golf in Austintown, the park is planning to hold a special event this weekend. On Saturday (Oct. 27) there will be a night tournament for disc golf. All baskets will be lit and there will be small lights attached to the discs. The event will start at 7 p.m. For more information, contact the park at 330-793-0718.
