Junior Mitchel Dunham will represent Boardman High School this Saturday, Nov. 10, at the OHSAA State Cross Country Championship after placing 16th overall in a time of 16:49 at this past Saturday's rainy and muddy OHSAA Northeast Regional Championship at BHS.

"I am thrilled for Mitchel," said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips. "He has had such a tremendous season and has worked so hard to get to state, he certainly deserves this. Our home course has been kind of a 'House of Horrors' for Mitchel since he has been in high school, so to get to state by way of our course is quite a big personal accomplishment for him."

Dunham was set to run at 12:30 p.m. last Saturday at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, but that was moved forward one week. This Saturday he will be seeking the school's second state champion in boys cross country history. Current Walsh University Cavalier runner Mark Hadley was state champion in 2013. The last Spartan to compete at the state meet was current YSU Penguin runner Chris Butler in 2016.

"Mitchel is going there with a lot of focus and will represent our program, school, and community very well on Saturday," said Phillips.

Late last week that state final was moved to this Saturday due to flooding conditions on the course at National Trail Raceway in Hebron, Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass has announced.

"While I wholeheartedly understand the impact this move has for all those involved in the event, this is the best solution for the safety and well-being of our participating student athletes," Snodgrass said. "National Trail Raceway has closed the course due to flooding with the on-going rain we have had in central Ohio, so the conditions will hopefully be much better by next weekend."

The schedule for the championships will be as follows:

Saturday, Nov. 10, National Trail Raceway, Hebron

11 a.m. Boys Division III

11:45 a.m. Boys Division II

12:30 p.m. Boys Division I

1:30 p.m. Girls Division III

2:15 p.m. Girls Division II

3 p.m. Girls Division I

The OHSAA will continue to update information on the cross country tournament on its website ( and Twitter and Facebook accounts.
