Austintown schools have a campus-wide lockdown

On Wednesday, Nov. 7 just after 2 p.m., the entire Austintown School Campus went on soft lockdown. The issue came after U.S. Marshals discovered a suspect at a nearby apartment complex.

Just after 2 p.m., the U.S. Marshals discovered a wanted suspect at Hillbrook Apartments, which are close to the campus. The school district was notified and as a precautionary measure, all buildings went into what is called soft lockdown.

"During the soft lockdown all exterior and classroom doors are locked and students remain in that room," Community Engagement Specialist Brittany Bueno said. "If a student needs to leave the classroom for a certain reason, they must have an escort."

She said when there is a soft lockdown, the staff and students are made aware of what is going on. They understand they are in a hallway restriction.

As for visitors, they can still enter the front office, but would not be permitted in the halls. If there is an issue near the front office, then the building would be totally off limits for entry. Bueno said at times it must be taken on a case-by-case basis while making a decision that holds the safety of the children in high priority.

"Staff do train for the hard lockdowns," Beuno said, "but our buildings are essentially in a modified soft lockdown each day as all exterior doors are locked and everyone is buzzed in.

The soft lock-down last Wednesday was lifted at approximately 2:30 p.m., after the suspect was apprehended. Dismissal times were not affected by the soft lockdown.
