Stadium Drive celebrates STEM Friday

November 14, 2018

In Boardman, STEM is hiding everywhere, even in a much-loved fairy tale like "The Three Little Pigs."

Every Friday, the first grade classes at Stadium Drive Elementary go to the Chengelis Science Lab at the school to discover and explore Friday STEM Kits. They call it STEM Fridays.

Each week, a new kit is introduced. Students recall facts, then apply skills with organizing data, (or graphs) then they develop a plan to approach a problem using reasoning skills.

Stadium Drive Elementary students Ethan McNutt, David Firman, Joshua Miller, and Mason Russo were constructing a house the wolf could not blow down.

This week's challenge was to build a house that even the big bad wolf could not blow down. First graders Ethan McNutt, David Firman, Josh Miller and Mason Russo thought they had it all figured out, but ended up surprised.

"They thought the sturdy house was too firm to blow over, but no!" said teacher Missy Struharik. "Their reaction was priceless, but the setback added to the learning experience. It was back to the drawing board, to plan a different structure."
