Dog Park met with strong opposition

The proposed dog park for Fair Park met with strong opposition at the Canfield City Council meeting on Nov. 7 when residents of the Villas at Fair Park showed up. One spokesperson for the group addressed council with a clear message, no dog park.

Resident Norma Remias told council, "We are here today to present our petition to council to strongly object to the dog park that is being proposed for Fair Park."

She claimed residents of Canfield have walked their dogs in Fair Park for years and "have done so without a dog park."

The dog park had been proposed after a Canfield couple stepped forward and offered to pay for setting up a small and large dog park. The Park Board reviewed the request and held a meeting at Fair Park and Greasel Park. Following that meeting, the Park Board decided against the Fair Park location.

"Fair Park is not the right location for a dog park," said City Councilman Chuck Tieche, who sits on the Park Board. "As an alternative we are looking at Greasel Park. There is enough room there, but there are drainage issues."

In closing her comments, Remias said, "Most likely you have heard the old saying, Not in my backyard. Well, we must say to you, not in our front yard."

On a different matter, City Manager Wade Calhoun informed council that a letter of interest had been submitted to the Veterans Administration regarding the consideration of the City of Canfield as a location for a new outpatient VA clinic. Mayor Richard Duffett said there was not a lot of competition for the clinic.

"The first round is for those who are showing interest," Duffett said. "As far as I know its only Youngstown and Canfield at this point."

In other business:

Duffett reported the October Mayor's Court grossed $6.775.09 and netted $5,637.09.

It was mentione that the city's annual Lighting of the Green will be held on Friday, Nov. 30.
