The local chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) will be holding a bed build at the Austintown Local Schools Transportation Department from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 15. The goal of the four-hour event is to assemble 20 bunk beds that will go to children in need. The Austintown connection was made after a few bus drivers expressed the desire to get involved.

"This bunk bed build will allow us to further SHP's mission and help us ensure that no kid sleeps on the floor in our town," said Jaden S. Karr, Public Relations Director for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, OH-Youngstown Chapter. "This will impact 40 children and their families by easing the burden of the cost of a bed off of their families."

Sleep in Heavenly Peace, OH-Youngstown Chapter, is a local organization dedicated to building and delivering bunk beds to children in need. The organization does that by partnering with many local organizations. This year they partnered with Denise DeBartolo-York, Austintown Rotary, Austintown Local Schools, Lowe's of Boardman, Bernard-Daniels, Walmart, Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Sleepy Hollow Sleep Shop, among many other people and businesses that helped make this build possible.

Karr said the children's names are referred to the program by the website when a family requests a bed at A friend of a family, parents, community members and basically anyone can also make the request. The local organization then determines the number of beds it will have and who needs it the most. The beds are then built, finished and either delivered or arranged to be picked up.

The build is just that; a group of volunteers will actually build the bunk beds from scratch, making it into a finished piece of furniture.

"We are seeking volunteer assistance with bed assembly and donors," Karr said.

There are experienced build team members present to assist the volunteers in the assembly and finishing details. Also needed is bedding that is child appropriate.

"Anyone can bring new bedding, pillows, and sheets, to the site," Karr said. "Any sheets are acceptable and child friendly is encouraged."

All the beds are complete with mattresses and bedding. Any donated bedding needs to be twin size.

"Sleep in Heavenly Peace is very grateful to the Youngstown community at large for their outpouring of generosity. Without all of our donors and volunteers, we would not be able to do what we do. Our team is looking forward to building twenty beds on Dec. 15 and getting 40 kids off the floor," Karr said.

Any donors may contact Karr at 330-770-6828, or email They may also contact Mickey (Dane) Carder, chapter president, at 234-567-3558, or email
