Boardman High School Orchestras to present winter concert

The award-winning Boardman High School Symphony, Chamber, and Classical Orchestras will present their annual Winter Orchestra Festival on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. in the Boardman Performing Arts Center.

Chamber Orchestra will open the program with a classical selection by Alan Hovhaness titled "Psalm and Fugue". They will then perform "Fantasia on Greensleeves" by 20th century nationalist composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The group will close their portion of the program with Handel's "Hallelujah Chorus" from the famous oratorio The Messiah.

Senior solo competition winner Delia Walkowiec will take the stage next. Walkowiec will perform "Elegie" by Gabriel Faure for cello and orchestra.

Walkowiec is the daughter of Michael and Crystal Walkowiec. She has studied cello for nine years, with the past four years being under the instruction of Michael Gelfand, principal chair of The Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and conductor of The Greenville Symphony Orchestra.

Walkowiec is the assistant principal in the Youngstown Youth Symphony Orchestra and for the past two years, principal chair in the Boardman High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras. She is also a member of Boardman High School Project Mayhem and plays cello in the Boardman School's string quintet. Walkowiec is a private cello teacher for middle school students.

Walkowiec has participated and earned superior ratings in OMEA solo and ensemble competition throughout high school. She has contributed to the superior ratings obtained by both the Boardman High School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras at State Orchestra Contest. She is also head manager and a librarian for the Boardman Orchestra.

Walkowiec is a member of the National Honor Society and plays on the Boardman Lacrosse Team. She is an active member of her church and is the President of the Junior Ukrainian Orthodox League which has earned chapter of the year for the past three years.

Walkowiec will be attending Youngstown State University in the fall of 2019. She will be majoring in Dental Hygiene pursuing her Bachelor's degree. After graduating from Youngstown State University she is planning on attending dental school.

Walkowiec would like to thank her parents, family, and directors for all the love, support and encouragement. In addition, she would also like to thank Michael Gelfand for his friendship, musical encouragement and being an outstanding mentor.

The Classical and Symphony Orchestra string sections will then combine to perform three rousing holiday tunes. The first of these combined pieces is titled "Five Ukrainians in a Bell Tower", which is a compilation of the jazz tune "Take Five" and the traditional holiday tune Ukrainian "Bell Carol." The next two pieces are arrangements of Trans-Siberian Orchestra tunes titled "Faith Noel" and "Siberian Sleigh Ride".

Finally, the 100-member Symphony Orchestra will close the evening with performances of "Finlandia" by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, several movements of "The Nutcracker Suite" by Tschaikowsky, "Music from Frozen" and the timeless classic "Sleigh Ride" by American composer Leroy Anderson.

The High School Orchestra concert will be held in the Boardman Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12. Admission is a $3 donation for adults, and a $1 donation for students. Preschoolers and senior citizens are admitted free of charge. The Boardman Orchestra program is under the direction of Michele Prokop, Bill Amendol and Joel Monaco.
