Sutton signs with Cleveland State to become tenth active wrestler

On Dec. 7, family, friends and team mates of Fitch wrestler Gus Sutton gathered in the wrestling room at the Austintown Fitness Center to support him as he signed his national letter of intent to continue his wrestling career at Cleveland State next year.

Sutton began wrestling while in the third grade and he continued through high school, making great strides along the way. He posted 129 career wins and is currently 7-0 on the this season. Sutton is a two-time state placer and has one honor that is rare.

"He is the only wrestler in the Steel Valley area to have earned the Fargo All-American honor," said Fitch wrestling coach John Burd.

Present for the official signing ceremony for Fitch wrestler Gus Sutton was his girlfriend Lily Fairbanks, sister and Fitch sophomore Abby Sutton, father Skip Sutton, Gus, mother Tracy Sutton, and Fitch wrestling coach John Burd.

The Fargo All-American tournament is held each year with the very best across the nation competing. Burd said Sutton really earned this award.

"He is an extremely hard worker and is dedicated to the sport," Burd said. "He is really explosive on his feet."

As for his choice of Cleveland State, Sutton said he really likes the coaching staff, including Coach Josh Moore, who he had met prior to his deciding on the college. Sutton is undecided regarding a major, but he is certain Cleveland State will be a good fit.

Burd said when Sutton starts his first season with Cleveland State, he will become the tenth current Fitch wrestler who is wrestling in college.

As for the present season, Sutton has one goal in mind.

"I want to go for a state championship," he said.
