Christmas giving campaign continues

Since 2012, the Chicken Coupe Cruisers Car Club has been partnering with the Austintown Fire Department to help provide a good Christmas for Austintown families who are down on their luck. The car club uses funds raised at its weekly summer Sunday car cruises at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown.

The Chicken Coupe Cruisers hold raffles and drawings at their car cruises fom May through September. Those proceeds are then used to purchase gift cards for toys and clothing and even an occasional card to help cover a utility bill, depending on the situation.

As to which families will get the Christmas help each year, Fire Chief Andy Frost said they work closely with the schools.

Accepting the annual Chicken Coupe Cruisers donation for the annual gift giving campaign are firefighters Jared Vinkler, Tom Metzinger, Sara Anton, Capt. Tim Heitzer, Assistant Chief Bob Williams, car club representative Dick Frost, and Fire Chief Andy Frost.

"The Austintown school counselors know who is hurting and who could use a helping hand," Chief Frost said.

The school provides the list of potential families, then it is up to those families whether or not to accept the gifts.

"We do get one once in a while who won't accept the help," the Fire Chief said.

Car club member Dick Frost, Andy's uncle, purchases the gift cards, then prepares for the delivery day prior to Christmas. Dick said he first calls the families to give them a heads up. The firemen then show up and deliver the gift cards and give many Austintown families a Christmas they would otherwise not be able to afford.

This year, Dick said the car club raised $3,000, which was a little less than some prior years.

"We had a lot of rain-outs this summer," he said.
