Boardman Swimmers use BTUB Groups to help community

While most high schoolers use the winter break to recharge their batteries and relax, the Spartan Swim and Dive Team was busier than ever.

"This is the time of year when we can get some extra work in, so we do two practices a day--one in the weight room and one at the pool. They are tired, maybe even miserable, but they know this is our final push prior to our championship and tournament competitions," said Coach Carlo Cordon.

The team isn't only preparing to swim fast, they have used their little extra time to help with community needs. A team building tradition for the Spartans is called BTUB--(Boardman Team Unity Building). It pairs seniors with a group of underclassmen, and they focus on community projects together. Senior swimmers organize, plan and participate in the service projects. This year, they included donations to the Salvation Army, helping out at Angels for Animals, and working a community lunch at St. Johns Episcopalian Church in Youngstown.

"BTUB is a way to put the team 'unity' into community," said Cordon. "We are really proud of how hard our kids work-in and out of the water."
