Senior named regional finalist in prestigious scholarship

Miles Spearman, a senior at Boardman High School, has been named a Regional Finalist for the 2019 Coca-Cola Scholars Program. He is one of only 251 chosen from across the country, from a pool of nearly 96,000 applications. The scholarship, now in its 31st year, is based on academic excellence, leadership and service demonstrated in school and community activities .

Spearman now enters the final phase, regional interviews, where 150 finalists will be named Coke Scholars in March. Each Coke Scholar will receive a $20,000 scholarship to the university of their choice, and be invited to a three-day scholars weekend in Atlanta in April.

Spearman has a long list of leadership positions at Boardman that include: National Honor Society President, Band Vice President, Vice President of Senior Class, and Vice President of Student Council.

His academic and extracurricular activities include robotics, cross country, track, marching band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble 1, emerging leaders, and Spanish national honor society.

he has participated in Youngstown Symphony Youth Orchestra (YSYO), Ohio Music Education Association's (OMEA) District 5 Honors Band, OMEA All State Jazz Ensemble (2017 & 2019), and in the Ohio Band Director Conference (OBDC) Honors Band in Akron, Ohio as well as his own local funk band.

Upon graduation, he intends to major in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in music.
