Poland Union Preschool will be hosting an open house on March 16 to highlight what it is all about. The staff and teachers of the preschool will be on hand to showcase the importance a preschool can make in a child's life.

The Poland Union Preschool is a separate entity that is operated under the auspice of the Poland School District. In essence, it is a school within a school that has been in existence for over 20 years. For a short three years it was moved to Poland North Elementary, then was brought back to Union.

"Although it is privately funded, we still follow state guidelines for curriculum," said Mike Masucci, who serves as the preschool's principal.

Poland preschool students Hunter Nagy, Cameron Schuster, Sam Slaina, Colin Wheatley, and Angelo Antonucci show off their creative skills as teacherTerry Wittenauer and aid Carrie Ogden observe.

He said the preschool plays an important role in a child's growth and preparations for entering elementary school. The students have opportunities to develop good attitudes towards themselves, the people around them, and the world in which they live.

The preschool has several options for parents. It begins with 3-year-olds who can attend a half-day session from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday and Thursday. It is a great way to introduce a 3-year-old to school life.

For 4- and 5-year-olds, the preschool has several options ranging from a Monday, Wednesday, Friday half day or full day session, or a transitional five-day, full-day schedule. Fees range from $130 per month for the two-day program to $20 per month for the five-day program.

According to preschool secretary Dianna Weaver, the average enrollment is around 60.

"We presently have 53 preschoolers," she said. "They come from Poland, Lowellville and we even have some from Columbiana."

She said anyone can obtain information by calling the preschool at 330-757-0851, or by attending the open house. At the open house, parents of potential preschool students can observe what kind of day the students have and what they are introduced to in the way of curriculum. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to noon on March 16.
