Boys track team opens season with big win

The Boardman boys track team opened the 2019 season with a 116-31-16 victory over the Cardinal Mooney Cardinals and Lowellville Rockets.

The Spartans opened the meet with a victory by senior Cameron Maloney, junior Zander Schobel, and sophomores Justin Maloney and Beau Gorby in the 4 by 800 meter relay. The next event, the 110-meter hurdles, the Spartans swept all four places with junior Brian Yauger in first, junior Manfred Kastiga second, sophomore Ryan Babb in third, and sophomore Isaac Nordquist in fourth. In the 100-meter dash, sophomore Dawaylon Pritchard took second and senior Zach Hillard was third.

"We have a very young team this year," said Boardman Head Coach John Phillips, "it is going to be a lot of fun watching the progress of these guys from meet to meet."

In the 1600-meter run, junior Mitchel Dunham placed first, junior Lars Wieck was second, Justin Maloney third, and freshman Jack Graff was fourth. Sophomore Cristian Ortiz placed first in the 400-meter run with classmate Brennan Stratton in second and junior Alan Cuevas in fourth. In the 300-meter hurdles, the Spartans took all four scoring spots with Yauger in first, sophomore Jonah Bacho in second, Kastiga in third, and Babb in fourth.

In the 800-meter run, Dunham was first, Wieck was second, and sophomore Anthony Marshall placed third. The 200 meter dash was won by junior Isaiah Suarez with Pritchard in fourth. The next event was the 3200-meter run which was won by Gorby with junior River Flatley second, Cameron Maloney in third, and Graff in fourth. The 4 by 400 relay team of Yauger, Marshall, Justin Maloney, and Dunham took first.

In the field events, the Spartans took second, third, and fourth in the long jump with the leaps of Hillard, sophomore Tyreek Jackson, and Stratton. In the high jump, freshman Anthony Hightower placed second, freshman Gerrick Angel was third, and Jackson was fourth. In the discus, senior Nikitas Missos placed second and junior Dave Merdich was fourth, while in the shot put Merdich was second and Missos third. Finally, in the pole vault, sophomore Sam Cammack was first, sophomore Ted Anzevino was second, sophomore Caydin Newberry was third, and Angel was fourth.

The meet MVP award went to both junior Lars Wieck and sophomore Dawaylon Pritchard for having outstanding performances in their first ever track meets of their high school careers.
