New faces for Poland Local Schools

The Poland Board of Education voted to hire Mark Zura as the district's new Director of Student Services.

Zura has nearly two decades of experience in education. He's served as the Director of Student Services for Boardman Local Schools for the last three years. Zura was also the Assistant Principal at Boardman High School for three years prior to becoming the Director of Student Services. Zura graduated from Youngstown State University, and started his teaching career in China. He worked as an Intervention Specialist for the Mahoning County Educational Service Center (MCESC) for seven years, and was also an Intervention Specialist for Boardman Schools. Zura resides in Poland.

"The Poland Local School District has a rich tradition of excellence. I'm excited for the opportunity to give back to the community I call home," said Zura.

Zura's contract is for three years and he will also serve as the District Testing Coordinator. Current Director of Student Services, Karen Kanotz, is retiring.

The Board of Education also approved the hiring of Liz Calderon, Guidance Counselor for Poland Seminary High School for the 2019-2020 school year. Calderon has served as a high school and elementary guidance counselor in Lowellville for six years. She is a Poland graduate and resides in Poland with her family. PSHS Guidance Counselor, Judy Volosin is retiring.

"I am excited to have the opportunity to work in the Poland Local School district, and I am thankful for the chance to give back to the district that laid a foundation of academic excellence for me," said Calderon.
