On May 22 and 23, from 6 to 8 p.m., the community will be invited to a free art show in the Canfield High School gymnasium. The show will have creations ranging from the first grade students through the CHS AP (Advanced Placement) art students work.

"This is a school-wide show," said AP art teacher Kevin Hoopes. "It will involve all high school, middle school, and elementary school students."

Hoopes said the show will be judged by two YSU professors and ribbons will be awarded prior to the show's opening night. This year's event is expected to have over 1,000 pieces entered, which will take the judges over six hours to find the ribbon winners.

While the lower grades will have pieces of art displayed, the upper high school, specifically the AP and CCP (College Credit Plus) art students will have booths filled with various works.

"If they are in the AP programs, they are required to have a booth," Hoopes said.

At CHS, the AP and CCP classes help students earn college credit while still in high school. It can save a student thousands in college tuition when they attend a college art program.

CHS has been offering the AP art classes for the past five years. Hoopes had to be accredited as a college-level instructor in order to offer the classes. For many, the AP classes have paid off.

Kaitlyn Burrows and Sophie Hodge are both planning to attend the Columbus College of Art this fall. Hodge is going to study interior design and Burrows is looking at illustrations.

"After we have been there for a year, we could get credit for the AP course we are now in," Burrows said.

Senior Candice Kraykovich is another AP student who will be looking at a design degree this fall as she starts classes at The Ohio State University.

Besides the art classes, the Student Art Show will also feature the creative side of wood technology, engineering graphics, and consumer sciences. Hoopes added the CHS Jaz Band will perform and there will be cookies and punch available for the public attending this free event.
