Dog rescue gets first shelter

Three years ago a small group of local dog lovers formed a rescue group to prevent all dogs from being put down because there was no place for them. Over the weekend that group, Every Dog Matters Rescue, took a big leap and opened its very first shelter in Boardman.

"Up until now, we have been only foster-based," said spokesperson Amanda Hamilton.

The new facility, located at 6329 Market St. in Boardman, has six spacious 5-foot by 10-foot kennels and a play room where the dogs can be assessed and trained. At the present time, the group's president, Shirley Persinger, said Every Dog Matters has 21 dogs, of which 15 are still under foster care.

Every Dog Matters Rescue spokesperson Amanda Hamilton and board member Polly Liscic say hello to 1-1/2 year old Kano who is one of six dogs that helped open the new facility at 6329 Market St. in Boardman over the weekend.

"We started Every Dog Matters Rescue because there are so many dogs needing shelters and not enough shelters," she said.

For those looking for a dog, the rescue group offers them at a cost ranging from $100 to $300, depending on age. The dogs have all had their shots, have been spayed or neutered, have been assessed, and the price includes training through Dogsmartz Unleashed.

Hamilton said having a shelter where people can visit will make adoptions much better. She said the new shelter was made possible thanks to the building's owner who is a dog lover.

"Our landlord, Michael Fortine helped us get this set up," she said. "People may remember the location as the former High Style Cleaners."

The immediate goal is to be open one evening during the week and on one weekend day. The location will also work well for those who want to volunteer with Every Dog Matters Rescue.

"We always need volunteers to walk and socialize with our dogs," Hamilton said.

She said to volunteer or to view the dogs available, visit the website There are forms on the site as well as contact information.

"Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that one dog, the world will change forever," Hamilton said. "Every Dog Matters is a small group of passionate people. Our values drive our goal to help the underdogs, the dogs that are overlooked, the ones that need extra time and training, the ones that need to learn to trust again. We vow to help any dog that we are able to, but our focus is on the ones that need the extra time to become adoptable. We do this by creating better lives for them through rescue, foster, training, and adoption. We strongly believe that all dogs deserve to be loved."
