Celebrate Poland returns bigger and better than ever

June 19, 2019
The Town Crier

All are welcome to join in for the 13th annual Celebrate Poland event on June 28 and 29, as the community celebrates Independence Day and Poland, Ohio. There are two exciting new events to enjoy this year: the "Guns and Hoses" softball tournament between police officers and firefighters, and a tour of the Truesdale House, owned by Atty. Michael Thompson.

The first annual softball game will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Firemen's Field on Riverside Drive, across from the cemetery. Vying for a coveted trophy are the village and township police officers and firefighters. The winners will receive their trophy and bragging rights at the Celebrate Poland main stage behind Village Hall at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Tours of the Truesdale House will happen from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday. The 200-year old home at 214 South Main Street is one of the oldest in Poland. A donation of $5 is encouraged, and all proceeds go to Celebrate Poland.

The weekend fun starts Friday, June 28 at 5:30 p.m. with the Annual Strawberry Festival at Poland Presbyterian Church, 2 Poland Manor, followed by the Firemen's Parade at 7 p.m. After the parade, at 7:45 p.m., a performance by the popular Cleveland area retro band Disco Inferno happens at the main stage. The band plays favorites from the Disco Era.

The festivities continue on Saturday, June 29. The day includes several events:

Additionally, food vendors will be behind Village Hall during all of the Friday and Saturday events. School bus shuttles will run free of charge from Poland Seminary High School from 6:30 p.m. until 11 p.m. on Saturday night.

There are opportunities for businesses or household to sponsor or co-sponsor one of the above events. Signage will indicate the sponsors at each event. The website - celebratepolandohio.com - offers a PayPal link to enable the public to make donations online. Celebrate Poland is an all-volunteer event, with all costs covered by donations from the community.

"Each year we try to bring something new to the event; this year, the historic Truesdale House tour and the 'Guns & Hoses' softball game. But we also have a mission: to make this an affordable, fun event, where friends and families make memories," said Cindy Best, Celebrate Poland Committee President. "Many of the old favorites are back, with a price reduction this year for kids' rides. On Friday, all the bounces and the ferris wheel will be $3 for the entire evening and on Saturday, $5 for the entire day and evening. We will also have many free activities. We can only do this because of community support through sponsorships and donations."
