Canfield High School has received the College Success Award, which honors schools that excel in ensuring students prepare for college, enroll in college and succeed once they get there.

"Canfield High School is providing their students with a high-quality public education that equips and empowers them with the skills to forge a path to bright futures," said Jon Deane, CEO of GreatSchools.org. "We applaud students, parents, teachers and the entire community in Canfield for their dedication to pursuing college success."

Launched by GreatSchools.org, the leading nonprofit provider of trusted school information, the 2019 College Success Award recognizes 1,722 schools in 25 states. Award-winning schools have a successful track record of graduating students who later enroll in two- or four-year college, are ready for college-level coursework, and persist on to their second year, according to available data from each state.

College- and career-ready graduates are critical to fueling the U.S. economy, as 65 percent of jobs will require a postsecondary degree by 2020. Canfield High School is one the approximately 20 percent of eligible schools in Ohio that won the College Success Award.

The College Success Award is possible because Ohio is leading the nation in collecting and being transparent in sharing information on how students do after high school, which is valuable information for families, educators, and policymakers.

Letter from Superintendent Alex Geordan:

Dear Canfield Community,

Often times when one thinks of the end of the school year they think about summer break. When I think of the end of the year, I think about all of the hard work each and every one of our staff engaged in during the past year and their influence on our 240 graduates in the Class of 2019.

Graduation is not a high school event. Graduation preparation begins at the tender age of 5 when scared little boys and girls board a bus for the first day of Kindergarten. Our elementary staff diligently teaches these students their ABC's, how to read and write, how to add and subtract, and what it means to be a Cardinal.

Next, these nervous fourth graders head to CVMS, where they will intertwine with new classmates from Hilltop or C.H. Campbell. The staff in the middle school works with these preteens and teens as they lay the foundation for their high school success.

Finally, those eighth graders walk into CHS realizing that this is the final step before the real world. Our high school staff teaches these nervous freshmen how to balance school and activities in order to become ready to enter college or the workforce.

The culmination of all the hard work by staff and students enabled the Class of 2019 to be offered over $12 million dollars in scholarships. U.S. News & World Report ranked Canfield High School in the top 5 percent statewide and 18th in Northeastern Ohio. Additionally, Canfield High School is a GreatSchools 2019 College Success Award winner!

We are excited about the recognition our high school received and look forward to seeing the mark the Class of 2019 will make in our community and beyond! We would like to thank all of our staff k-12 and supportive families who helped contribute to the success of our high school and our graduates.

We hope everyone has a safe, healthy, and enjoyable summer! It's a great time to be a Cardinal!

Educationally,

Alex G. Geordan
