Boy Scout Troop 9002 hosts fundraising shoe drive

July 10, 2019
The Town Crier

The Scouts of Troop 9002 in Poland are inviting the public to participate in a drive-thru shoe drive on Saturday, July 13, 2019 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Poland United Methodist Church, 1940 Boardman Poland Rd. (Rt. 224) in Poland, Ohio. They are raising funds for their Troop and are accepting donations of gently worn, used and new shoes.

For those unable to come on Saturday, drop off boxes are located at the Poland United Methodist Church, Poland Township Administration Building, Szalay Chiropractic, and Trinity Fellowship Church in Poland now through the end of August. For those unable to sell their shoes at their garage sales, consider donating them to the Troop.

The donated shoes will be redistributed to microenterprise partners through Funds2Orgs, a for profit social enterprise, and used in developing nations for impoverished people to start their own businesses. The Troop will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected.

In the US alone, over 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away every year. The materials used to manufacture a pair of shoes are created from chemical compounds that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills. By donating your gently worn, used and new shoes to the Scouts of Troop 9002, your shoes are given a second chance to make a difference and reduces the impact on our environment.

Contact Joe Wrenn from the Troop at 330-717-8904 or at jpwrenn@msn.com if you are unable to drop shoes off yourself or have a large number of shoes to donate.
