Poland Village Councilman Sam Moffie reported the Mauthe Bridge Project is moving forward with the advertising for bids taking place this month. The hope is the bids will come in under what is expected.

"No tax dollars are being used for this restoration," Moffie said. "Funds will be coming from [donations made to the] Forest Foundation and could be as high as $100,000. We won't know for sure until the bids come in."

The Mauthe Bridge is a steel, steel cable, and wood pedestrian bridge across Yellow Creek in Poland Forest. It was dedicated in 1956 and was named for J.L. Mauthe, President of Youngstown Sheet and Tube, which donated the materials for the bridge.

Last year M.S. Consultants engineer Gary DiOrio examined the bridge for the Forest Board and determined it was unsafe for use. The report said it would take an estimated $86,000 to restore it.

"The Sheet and Tube iron will stay and the restoration work will bring the bridge back to its original look," Moffie said.

The bridge committee is set to advertise for bids on the project. Moffie said once thos bids come in and are gone over, a recommendation will be given to council.

In the meantime, the Forest Foundation is seeking donations for the project. Donations can be sent to Poland Forest Foundation c/o Village of Poland, 308 South Main Street, Poland, Ohio, 44514, or donations can be made at the committee's GoFundMe page.
