Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church has a youth group that is very involved in making a difference in the community. They have several projects going and will be starting a new year next month.

POP Church holds several fundraisers. Among them is a clothing drop off bin in the parking lot. The church gets pennies per pound for clothing dropped off. The church takes what is collected and donates to the Beatitude House. The most recent donation was over $1,200.

"This site does well," said Graham Stec from the St. Pauly Textile company, who pays for the clothing. "This drop averages 50 bags a week. That is really good."

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church’s Youth Group members Jake Cracraft, Kendall Dancker, Georgia Smith, Zoey Golec, Charlee Ritzler and Bruce Smith deliver a donation for the children at Akron Children’s Hospital in Boardman.

Another big fundraiser is the monthly "coins for a cause" collection. The Youth Group handles this one.

"Every three months we send a check to a charity," said POP Church secretary Jeanie Fortunato. "The youth decide which charity."

The Youth Group also does charity work like collecting books, games, and fund things for Akron Children's Hospital and care kits for Sole Hope, to go to Uganda to help those with jiggers.

The youth will be working next month to collect dog and cat treats and needed materials for Angels for Animals. Their collection list of needs also includes Windex, paper towels, Swiffer dusters, disinfecting wipes, kitten wet food, and old towels. They will be collecting the items at 2 p.m. on Oct. 6 when POP Lutheran Church hosts the pet blessing in the outdoor pavilion.

All these activities keeps the Youth Group members active in helping to support the community. The group will continue to focus on service projects for both local and international organizations. The first meeting for the new year will take place on Oct. 2 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church located at 2985 Center Road in Poland. The Youth Group is open to K through 12th grade and can help students needing service hours.
