Boardman students and staff spruce up the neighborhood for Day of Caring

More than 40 Boardman High School students and district staff members were happy to work up a sweat on Sept. 6 to spruce up a Southside Youngstown neighborhood. Boardman Local School's Emerging Leaders have volunteered for the United Way Annual Day of Caring for the last five years, and the students say it's one of their favorite volunteer experiences.

"Our emerging leaders group evolved from the High School's YES Fest, where we encourage students to say no to drugs, but to say 'YES' to volunteering of all types," said advisor Dana Safarek. "The Day of Caring has become a tradition for our kids--in fact, for some of our seniors it's their fourth year working to make a difference with the United Way."

The students edged sidewalks, pruned trees, cleared out brush, and picked up trash along Hillman and Chalmers on the lower Southside of Youngstown.
