Mooney Speech Team travels back in time

Visitors to the Western Reserve Village (WRV) during the Canfield Fair may have visited some of the historic structures and received a vocal history lesson from some special students. Members of the Cardinal Mooney Speech Team staffed the buildings and gave speeches on the history of each.

"They do such a nice job," said Carrie Burkey, one of the WRV members.

By having the students in the historic buildings, it adds a level of security, provides a more personal historic view, and helps the speech team gain some valuable experience.

The doctor is in. Mooney Speech Team senior and team president Alexandria Patrone of Poland helped introduce fairgoers to the way things were in the 1800s by providing information on the historic Dr. Patton’s Office at the Western Reserve Village during this year’s fair.

"They are each given a paper with some background on the buildings," said Mooney Director of Forensics Vince Taddei. "Our students memorize it, prepare some remarks, and then open up to questions. It's really a great warm-up to the season, and they all have a lot of fun with it."

The Mooney Speech Team has roughly 20 students on it this year. Taddei said they had all qualified to state competition and one in particular, Kat Wilkins of Boardman is a National qualifier.

Another part of the program is a donation the Village makes to the speech team. Taddei said it is a big help.

"The Village is kind enough pay the program a nice amount," he said. "it really goes a long way to raise funds. Speech and Debate is easily the most expensive, non-revenue-driving activity in our school. It is very expensive to run a team throughout the season."
