Boardman schools honor veterans

November 6, 2019
The Town Crier

Nov. 11 is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by veterans to keep America free. In Boardman schools, that goal is brought to life through a variety of ceremonies.

At Glenwood Junior High School, Ohio State Representative Don Manning and Air Force Reservist Major Vito Abruzzino will be the featured speakers at a Veterans Day Assembly on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m.

Nearly 700 Glenwood students have extended open invitations to veterans and active duty service members who are relatives, neighbors and friends. Administrators are hoping to fill the school gymnasium with as many of our valley veterans as possible for this school wide event. Veterans interested in attending are asked to call the BGJHS Main Office at 330-726-3414 and provide their name along with their branch of military service.

"We are very excited that both Representative Manning and Major Abruzzino will be here to share their experiences with the students, and to help us honor our local military men and women," said Glenwood teacher Vince Carnevale, who organized the program. "We also invite our visiting veterans and their families to join us after the assembly for refreshments in the auditorium."

The elementary schools in Boardman will have their own programs on Monday.

Stadium Drive Elementary will host a Breakfast at 8:20 a.m. with patriotic music that should run until 9:15 a.m. Stadium has been hosting this event for several years, and anticipates approximately 100 veterans will be in attendance.

West Elementary is providing lunch for veterans between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Nov. 11. There, the children will dine with them, so that veterans can share their personal stories of service, and sacrifice. The lunch is followed by a Patriotic Music Celebration performed by the Third Grade at 12:20 p.m.

Robinwood Lane Elementary will celebrate veterans on Tuesday, Nov. 12. Robinwood Elementary music teacher Robert Pavalko will lead the third graders in a patriotic program at 1:15. Veterans will also receive certificates of thanks.
