Poland Lions kick off annual blanket drive

November 13, 2019
J.T. Whitehouse , The Town Crier

On Nov. 1, the Poland Lions Club kicked off their annual blanket drive that will run through Nov. 30. The annual blanket collection will go individuals who are in need of a little warmth over the winter months.

"There is a lot of need in all of our communities," said Poland Lion Judy Young. "One year we distributed 50 blankets and these individuals have been so grateful. There have been tears with gratitude and thank you notes written to us. Truly this service project and has been an eye opener. We often do not realize when we are warm and fed how much is needed by others, especially the elderly."

This is the seventh year for the Poland non-profit to collect new blankets to hand out to those in need. Young said the collection begins with requests for blankets, which are received through local churches participating in the Poland Food Pantry and through the schools.

"The number of blankets given out each year depends on requests," Young said. "Any extras are distributed to other community groups such as the veterans, Catholic charities and children services after the needs of our community are delivered."

For 2019, the requests received so far are for over 50 blankets, but Young said there is a possibility for a few more. She said applications are still being received. The blankets will be handed out during Food Pantry Day.

She said the blankets need to be new and the club is looking for all sizes, but the largest number of requests are for the full/queen sizes.

For those wishing to contribute, but don't have time to run out and purchase blankets, they can donate monetarily by sending the donation to: Poland Lions Blanket Drive, P.O. Box 5424, Poland, Ohio, 44514. The funds can be used to meet the size needs that aren't covered.

For donations of new blankets, the following locations are serving as drop off sites for the program: Poland Methodist Church, Poland Farmer's National Bank, Town & Country Cleaners, Poland Home Savings, La France Cleaners, Martial Arts Training Center at 15 West McKinley Way, and Wittenauer's Cafe.

The Poland Lions are 501-c4 organization by IRS Standards
